MUSIC LESSONS WITH MRS RIDLEY
Y1-6 have fortnightly sessions with Mrs Ridley. These sessions focus on singing, learning to play a musical instrument, composition and improvisation. Y1 work with untuned percussion to explore different sounds, Y2 introduce tuned percussion including chime bars and glockenspiels. KS2 then learn how to play the recorder. Each child is provided with their own recorder and these will journey with them through KS2 as they develop their understanding of notation and the dimensions of music.
Reception follow the 'Charanga' program focused on learning nursery rhymes, action songs and making sounds. Nursery also explore the making of music in their setting and our cubs room take part in 'Rhythm time'.
LISTENING AND APPRAISING SESSIONS
Y1-Y6 take part in fortnightly listening and appraising sessions focused on different music styles, using appropriate musical vocabulary, developing their listening skills and making comparisons between different pieces of music. Each half term focuses on either Western classical music, popular music or musical traditions during which time we provide the children with opportunities to hear music from a wide range of different cultures. Each half term uses one focus pieces of music that the children look at in more depth but other pieces are used in addition to make comparisons.
Please see the outline and knowledge organisers below for more details about the songs that have been selected to give our children a broad overview of music.

Y5 RECORDER CONCERT AT VICTORIA HALL 2022
5M did an amazing job representing Hempstalls during the Recorder Festival. They have worked incredibly hard practising their pieces for the performance and were superb representatives on the day.
PERFORMANCES AT HEMPSTALLS
All children at Hempstalls are given regular opportunities to perform and share their talents with parents and other peers. Please take a look at our performances page for more details.
Our choir regularly performs in the community at local care homes, the Royal Stoke hospital and even at local supermarkets to spread some cheer. We also love to take part in the annual Rotary concert and other productions at school. We're looking forward to getting back on the road after COVID restrictions have eased.
